Alibaba Group Holding is set to join the race for a ChatGPT competitor in the Chinese market with its new artificial intelligence model. The model, known as Tongyi Qianwen or “Truth from a Thousand Questions,” will be incorporated into Alibaba’s various products and services, including its smart home appliance provider Tmall Genie and Slack-like DingTalk app. The CEO, Daniel Zhang, hopes to capitalize on the AI frenzy sparked by OpenAI’s ChatGPT by offering lower pricing for cloud computing services to customers who need to train their own models.

The Tongyi Qianwen AI model will handle queries in both English and Chinese and will soon have image recognition and text-to-image generation capabilities. Chinese tech companies such as Baidu and SenseTime Group have also launched similar AI platforms to compete in this growing market.
