Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to launch a new traffic system to improve pedestrian safety on roads. The Smart Pedestrian Signals project is part of the authority’s second phase of expansion and will add ten new locations to the existing project. By 2024, the total number of Smart Pedestrian Signal locations is expected to increase to 28. The project uses cutting-edge smart technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance traffic management, ensuring the safety of both pedestrians and motorists.
The Smart Pedestrian Signals technology uses sensors connected to a ground optical system synchronised with the signal’s light operation to perceive pedestrian movement on the pavement and crossing, which significantly improves pedestrian safety while also enhancing traffic flow. The first phase of the project saw no pedestrian accidents since its launch. The project aims to support Dubai’s ambition to become a leading smart city and a global trailblazer in intelligent traffic systems.
