‘Crossroads Emerging Leaders Program’ by Harvard Business School Club of the GCC & The Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute Supports 71 Students in 2018 Edition Held in Dubai

0

Harvard professors welcomed this year 71 first-generation college students from Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia to the 2nd annual Crossroads Emerging Leaders Program held in Dubai. Crossroads is a collaboration between the Harvard Business School Club of the GCC (HBS) and the  Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute. The other partners include Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC), Air Arabia, Dubai Future Accelerator and Expo 2020. The co-sponsors are Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University, and the Harvard University Center for African Studies.

Speaking to the group of students at the CEO and Mentor panel at Crossroads Emerging Leaders Program 2018, Hala Matar Choufany – President of HVS, Middle East, Africa and South Asia, and a board member of HBS Club of the GCC – stressed not only on the significance of education but the various other attributes that lead to success. During the discussion she highlighted qualities required in the workplace such as good attitude, creativity, flexibility, commitment and pushing oneself to improve and succeed.

Hala said, “There is a saying: ‘The only disability in life is a bad attitude’ and I strongly believe in that because everything else you can achieve. As an employer at HVS, and also as an individual, when we look at CVs it is great to know the academic qualifications, but we hire for attitude. So, have a positive attitude, stay focused and stay determined and you will definitely succeed.”

Elaborating on the approach one needs to have, Hala continued, “In current days looking at global economies and having worked with so many diverse audiences, cultures and markets, I will say one strategy does not fit all. You need to be adaptable and understand the contextual and cultural aspect. It is all about how we think differently and being creative. A lot of what we do in the real life and in our business is about passion – especially the hospitality sector.”

Crossroads is a unique, fully-funded career development opportunity for accomplished, ambitious young people who have already had to overcome significant barriers to higher education and gives them access to Harvard courses and training modules. Hala said, “This year we saw a larger and more diverse group of students including 30 women exposed to a greater variety of disciplines within Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM), business and leadership. In the coming years we are looking to have a greater representation from the Middle East as well as higher number of women participating in it.”

The Crossroads program supports students who are the first in their families to attend college and may also be facing challenging financial and social circumstances that discourage them from applying to postgraduate schools. It covers the costs of the students’ international travel, boarding, lodging and class materials. This year 1732 students applied from 69 countries across the region. Out of these 500 students were shortlisted for the final stage of interviews from where 71 students were selected for the 2018 course.

The 3-year plan is to expand the program in Dubai and especially in local communities through electronic platforms to allow emerging leaders from the greater region to get access to Harvard courses and training modules.

During the 2018 edition students engaged with each other and faculty through the renowned Harvard Business School case-study method of teaching and learning, exposing them to real, contemporary business scenarios. Executives from leading private and publicly-owned multinational companies visited the classroom to interact with students and offer their invaluable wisdom and experience.

The Harvard faculty leading the Crossroads program include Tarun Khanna, SAI Director and Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor, Harvard Business School; Karim R. Lakhani, Charles E. Wilson Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School, co-director of the Laboratory for Innovation Science at Harvard, and the faculty co-founder of the HBS Digital Initiative.

It fosters collaboration among members and helps them to make a difference in their lives, businesses and broader community. With an Annual Turnover of $400 Million CIS Group Unveils Aggressive Expansion Plans for its Distribution Business, Hiperdist in MEA

The CIS Group, a leading technology provider in the Middle East and Africa with an annual turnover of USD 400 million, announced the opening of its state-of-the-art facilities for its distribution business arm Hiperdist in Dubai with aggressive expansion plans. The new wholly owned premises are located at Boulevard Plaza Tower – 1 in Emaar Square in Downtown Dubai and are now fully operational. Dr. Antoine Kareh, the Group CEO, said, “Hiperdist has been an established player in Africa and commands nearly 35% of our business. The company is now positioning strongly in the Middle East, especially the UAE market, in addition to expanding further in Africa. We have made a significant investment in our new owned facility in Dubai that has been designed to facilitate and leverage this growth and expansion for the company while providing greater support to our global network with a broader geographic coverage in the MEA region. It is definitely one of the fastest growing markets in the world and will continue to evolve. We are targeting a growth of 15% per year in these new markets”. Hiperdist is a leading technology distributor and solution provider spanning multiple markets and application segments. The company began operations in the UAE in 2014. Mr. Santosh Sansare, General Manager of Hiperdist, stated, “Since the beginning we have enjoyed exceptional success at Hiperdist UAE, registering an average growth of 25% per year. Our latest facility in Emaar Square gives us a definite competitive edge and will allow us to meet the demands of the new technologies while accelerating our planned expansion. Some of the major brands that we currently have in our portfolio include Synology, ZOTAC and G.Skill, CANON, LENOVO, AVAYA, VERTIV, ACER, ASUS, VIEWSONIC. In addition, at a group level we have been working with ORACLE, CISCO, VMWARE, NETAPP to name just a few.” Hiperdist is at the forefront of the latest advancements and has made major inroads in the arena working with brands offering the most innovative products. Mr. Santosh Sansare stressed, “The market is changing and the opportunities for us going forward are huge. We are witnessing excellent growth driven by innovation across all our main markets. Looking ahead, there is going to be more rapid development of innovative solutions globally and more sophisticated end-users to drive superior results. Therefore, inventive technology is at the heart of our multi-faceted business approach. Our strategy is to focus on ‘new innovative brands’ or ‘innovative quarter’ from established brands. We want to enable them in the Middle East and Africa distributing more innovative products into more markets.” Elaborating on the company’s core strengths, Dr. Kareh, said, “Our number one objective is to add value to our partners by finding ways to help them gain bigger market share and that’s how we differentiate ourselves from our competitors. There are very few specialists in the marketplace that have the ability to serve manufacturers in more than 30 countries across MEA. And by this we do not only mean large multinationals. There are far too many regional or smaller brands who want to grow but don’t have the means to do so and we enable them by providing an efficient and effective go to market strategy with an innovative and a feasible business framework. At Hiperdist we certainly know the market and have the success factors needed to grow including a great team, extensive experience and a suitable portfolio of products. In addition, we have the resources to respond quickly to new competitive threats, whether these come from existing competitors or from new entrants into the market.” The bar has been set higher for distribution and cloud services are one of the fastest growing segments of the industry. Dr. Kareh, stated, “Cloud has surfaced as one of the biggest challenges for our industry and the complexity reaches an all-time high due to new business models, platform integrations and automation. At Hiperdist we are fully equipped to meet market requirements as new technologies evolve. Since its inception, Hiperdist has earned an outstanding reputation by delivering superior quality products and providing extensive value-added offerings and services to its channel partners and customers. Our success is built on credibility. We will continue to find ways to help our network of brands grow at the required pace”. About CIS Group With a footprint in over 30 countries, serving over 1000 corporate customers and 5000 resellers, CIS Group has proven to be a leading technology provider in the Middle East and Africa since its foundation in 1980. The group launched UNIDIST (the holding company that houses the group’s distribution business) in 1992 which quickly established itself as one of the top information technology distributor and supply chain solution provider across the region. LENOVO AND BOCO INTER-TELECOM, MAVENIR ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, COMMITTED TO BUILDING FULL-STACK NFV SOLUTIONS

0
At Lenovo Tech World 2018, Lenovo signed two strategic partnership agreements, respectively with BOCO Inter-Telecom, a leading vendor of telecommunications network management systems, and Mavenir, a global leader in virtualized network functions. Partnering with these two companies, Lenovo is committed to advancing its capabilities in NFV management and orchestration (MANO) and virtualized network functions (VNF). The announcement of these two partnerships represents Lenovo’s latest efforts to build a full-stack NFV product portfolio and push for the convergence of information technology (IT) and communications technology (CT). Present at the signing ceremonies were Dr. Ying Huang, VP of Lenovo and Head of Enterprise & Cloud Research and 5G Research Labs at Lenovo Research, Mr. Jason Wei, VP and GM of Lenovo Converged Network Business Unit, Mr. Xiaofeng Chen, Board Member, Assistant to the CEO, and CTO of BOCO Inter-Telecom, and Mr. Eddy Lin, VP R&D of Mavenir. BOCO Inter-Telecom has extensive experience in technology, product development, and large-scale deployment of telco network operations support systems (OSS). Integrating MANO-NFVO/G-VNFM, its NFV OSS-iFOCUS system was Finalist of TMF 2018 IT Transformation Best Solution, and its MANO-NFVO/G-VNFM are leading products in the field. Mavenir is the industry’s only 100% software, end-to-end Cloud-Native 4G/5G network solutions provider for CSPs and a global VNF leader with vast experience in large-scale commercial NFV deployments. The partnership with Lenovo will focus on bringing Mavenir’s leading technologies into Lenovo’s NFV portfolios for the China market. Partnering with these two companies and leveraging Lenovo’s industry-leading NFV infrastructure (NFVI) software and hardware products, R&D and services capabilities, and its leadership in the IT industry, Lenovo is well-positioned to create state-of-the-art NFV solutions to serve telco operators and enterprise customers. Lenovo’s NFV Strategy and Products Lenovo has been dedicated to building end-to-end converged cloud and communications solutions, ranging from devices to the cloud, hardware to software, and products to services. NFV is the technological foundation and catalyst for the convergence of cloud and communications and the convergence of the IT and CT industries. Lenovo builds full-stack NFV products, solutions, and services. Its portfolios cover a wide range of NFVI hardware, cloud operating systems, VNF and MANO software. Lenovo x86 servers have ranked No. 1 globally in terms of reliability and customer satisfaction in recent consecutive years. Lenovo is also continuously developing new products for emerging areas such as 5G, edge computing, and IoT. With enhancements and optimizations of its enterprise products, such as the cloud operating system, software-defined storage, and hardware management platform, Lenovo has developed leading NFVI software products to meet the most stringent requirements of telco operators in areas such as performance, availability, and manageability. For VNFs and MANO, Lenovo is developing organic products and partnering with global leaders to jointly build total solutions, as exemplified by the partnerships with BOCO Inter-Telecom and Mavenir. Deep Collaboration with Operators, Vendors, and Ecosystem Lenovo has been an active participant in telco operators’ NFV testing, trials and specification of technology requirements. It has also been collaborating closely with operators and leading vendors, jointly researching and developing new technologies and products. Lenovo is a platinum member of Linux Foundation Networking and fully embracing open-source technologies and solutions to help telco and cloud service providers transform their networks to achieve greater agility and flexibility. At Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona and Shanghai 2018, Lenovo and its partners demonstrated 5G-ready virtualized base stations, industry’s first cloud-RAN solution supporting heterogeneous acceleration hardware and full decoupling of software and hardware, and FPGA-based vBRAS solutions. In early 2018, Lenovo and its partners completed China’s first testing of NFV converged rack solutions. NFV Industry and Technology Seeing Rapid Development The industry is converging towards NFV. Many large telco operators announced their NFV plans and some have started commercial deployments. The technical feasibility of NFV has been fully validated in the case of mobile core networks. Virtualization and cloudification of the radio access network (RAN) have also gained significant progress in both technology and industry ecosystems. The global O-RAN Alliance was launched in February 2018, aiming to advance the technology and commercialization of RAN virtualization and cloudification. Lenovo is a core member of the O-RAN Alliance. Commercial NFV deployments, however, thus far have been limited to the control plane. But virtualization and cloudification of data-plane VNFs is the ultimate key to achieving the core values of NFV, such as cost reduction, service flexibility, and so forth. Lenovo is actively researching this area and has achieved various industry-leading results. Building upon NFV, Lenovo will extend its leadership and influence beyond the IT industry, leveraging its extensive experience in industry verticals, e.g. manufacturing, education and health, to facilitate convergence of the IT and CT technologies and the two industries. Lenovo is committed to the technology innovation and ecosystem development in diverse areas, such as 5G, edge computing, cloud computing, IoT, enterprise digitalization, smart cities, and smart manufacturing. Microsoft Corp. and Grab, the leading on-demand transportation, mobile payments and online-to-offline services platform in Southeast Asia, announced on Monday a strategic partnership that will transform the delivery of digital services and mobility in the region by leveraging Microsoft’s world-class expertise in machine learning and other artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. As a first step in the broad collaboration between the two companies, Grab will adopt Microsoft Azure as its preferred cloud platform and Microsoft will make a strategic investment in Grab.

“This partnership signals a deep collaboration with Microsoft on an array of technology projects, including big data and artificial intelligence, that will transform the delivery of everyday services and mobility solutions in Southeast Asia,” said Ming Maa, president of Grab. “As a global technology leader, Microsoft’s investment into Grab highlights our position as the leading homegrown technology player in the region. We look forward to collaborating with Microsoft in the pursuit of enhancing on-demand transportation and seamless online-to-offline experiences for users.” “Our partnership with Grab opens up new opportunities to innovate in both a rapidly evolving industry and growth region,” said Peggy Johnson, executive vice president at Microsoft. “We’re excited to team up to transform the customer experience as well as enhance the delivery of digital services for the millions of users who rely on Grab for safe and affordable transport, food and package delivery, mobile payments, and financial services.” As the top mobile online-to-offline platform in Southeast Asia, Grab operates in 235 cities across eight Southeast Asian countries, and Grab’s digital wallet, GrabPay, is the leading player in Southeast Asia. These special innovation projects include: Big data, AI and machine learning
  • To help improve passenger and driver safety and security, Grab will work with Microsoft to explore new authentication mechanisms such as mobile facial recognition with built-in AI for drivers and customers who opt in, as a replacement for checking IDs, that help match both driver and passenger identities to the reservation.

For example, passengers will be able to take a photo of their current location and have it translated into an actual address for the driver.
  • To improve map creation and quality, Grab plans to tap into the power of Microsoft’s machine learning capabilities.
Other areas of collaboration
  • Microsoft Outlook integration. Grab will provide on-demand transportation booking options to Outlook users so they can seamlessly book rides directly in the application and be alerted with calendar reminders.

0
Today at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) (Booth #1421), Samsung Electronics America, Inc. announced it is partnering with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s (CDCR) Enterprise Information Services (EIS) Division to develop a new mobile solution that supplements existing public safety communication systems. The custom solution will include an Agent Alert messaging system exclusively for CDCR law enforcement personnel to communicate with Command Central, and an SOS application function for supporting them if they are caught in an adverse situation. Customized with Samsung Knox Configure for Samsung Galaxy smartphones, Agent Alert is a secure messaging app that can be initiated from the Galaxy smartphone or a single web console to allow central command to distribute both critical and non-emergency messages to anyone within the department as needed. By moving this critical communications functionality away from computer-aided dispatch (CAD), CDCR is helping to ensure consistent communications among its teams. “Communications among first responders and agents in the field, which still rely in many parts of the United States on outdated technology, are ripe for transformation,” said Reginald Jones, U.S. Head of Public Safety, Samsung Electronics America. “The solution CDCR is deploying leverages the latest in mobile technology to ensure real-time awareness and secure communications around high risk situations. It’s an important step towards this overall transformation and modernization of public safety communications, which Samsung is committed to helping achieve.” Samsung and EIS, CDCR’s technology team, will also soon deploy a customized SOS application, which allows personnel to communicate critical situational information to Command Central when encountering adverse events. When the alert button on the customized device is pressed, Command Central can assess the information provided, and quickly dispatch the appropriate help to the location based on type of incident and level of threat. The solution facilitates ongoing communication between dispatched personnel by text. All Samsung Galaxy devices come equipped with defense-grade security platform Samsung Knox so agents can ensure mission-sensitive data is protected, whether they are at their desk or out in the field. Samsung will display CDCR’s new Agent Alert App solution alongside its portfolio of Samsung and partner-developed police and first responder solutions at its booth at IACP. Solutions on display will include the following:
