Swiss-Belhotel International Participates at the Global Solar Leaders’ Summit

Dubai – Devinder K. Sharma, Regional Director of Technical Services, Swiss-Belhotel International, participated in a panel of experts on BIPV at the Big 5 Global Solar Leaders’ Summit. The topic discussion was ‘Innovation in Solar Building Skins and Energy Efficiency towards Sustainable Cities’.

Renewable energy is a global phenomenon and the adoption of solar PV systems in the Middle East is starting to accelerate which will soon lead to a more diversified national energy supply portfolio. Devinder said, “We are seeing massive investments in renewable energy projects in the region with a wave of projects underway and the UAE is leading the way.”

Talking about the hotel industry, Devinder highlighted the need for development of innovative design concepts for achieving energy efficiency in hotel buildings. He stressed, “Key issue is the collaboration among the various stakeholders of the building design and construction process, such as building owners, developers, architects, building material suppliers, regulatory authorities and specialized PV/BIPV industry experts. Increasing awareness among all people involved can lead to significant benefits for our sector. Therefore, it is important to start a dialogue, so we can all collaborate for a better future.”

There are multiple factors that are driving solar energy solutions in the urban sector. Industry experts agreed that in order to prepare for an urban influx of 2.5 billion people by 2050, it is critical to create cities that are low-carbon, resilient and affordable. Solar energy solutions are greener and cheaper than the alternatives.

According to recent reports, the UAE is among the world’s top investors in clean energy and is set to invest AED 600 billion by 2050 in the sector with a target to have 75 per cent of the total power output from it. Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park has announced plans to build one of the world’s largest solar energy plants, which will be able to generate 5GW of power by 2030.

Etihad Airways launches inaugural flight to Barcelona

The UAE national airline is celebrating the occasion in style by hosting a special event held at the historic Capella dels Angels, a sixteenth-century Gothic building which is now part of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), attended by leading figures from the local government, diplomats, media, corporate partners and travel trade.

Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer Etihad Aviation Group, said: “We have been tremendously excited about the launch of this service and what better time to arrive here than the month Etihad celebrates its 15thanniversary. “Commercial and cultural links between the UAE and the Catalonia region are flourishing and Etihad is honoured to play a pivotal role in facilitating and enhancing the growth of trade and the strong demand for tourism. This is a breathtakingly beautiful part of the world, with something to offer the most discerning of travellers, and now for the first time, Abu Dhabi, our amazing home, is accessible from Barcelona with regular non-stop flights, featuring Etihad’s acclaimed inflight hospitality. “On behalf of the Etihad Aviation Group, I extend our sincere thanks to the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee for their invaluable support with the new service, the launch event, and for their genuine welcome.” The number of visitors from the UAE to Spain has been rising rapidly, thanks in part to a successful Schengen visa waiver programme introduced for UAE nationals in 2015.

The new route will initially be operated five times a week by a two-class Airbus A330-200 before becoming a daily operation from 31 March 2019.

Barcelona is the second city in Spain served by Etihad Airways, complementing the airline’s existing daily service to Madrid. The new link will provide business and leisure travellers with convenient timings to travel between Abu Dhabi and Barcelona, also providing seamless onward connections through Abu Dhabi to major cities in the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, and Australia.

Etihad Airways operates an extensive codeshare partnership with Air Europa (UX) allowing guests a seamless transfer with the Spanish airline’s services between Barcelona and Madrid. Etihad also codeshares with Air Europa beyond Madrid to 19 cities in Europe, South America, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Samsung Electronics Expands Horticulture LED Lineups to Advance Greenhouse and Vertical Farming

0
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today announced new horticulture LED lineups, including full-spectrum packages and modules as well as color (monochromatic) LEDs. Optimized for lighting in greenhouses and vertical farming*, the new LEDs provide a broader spectrum of light for healthier plant growth, enhanced farming environments and reduced lighting system costs. Full-spectrum light encompasses a continuous range of wavelengths from blue and green to red, creating a light blend suitable for horticultural uses. Compared to narrow spectrum lighting, Samsung’s full-spectrum-based LEDs encourage healthier and more balanced plant growth by stimulating photosynthesis, enhancing plant immunity and increasing nutritional value. Additionally, the LEDs can help to improve the overall farming environment by enabling growers to observe plant conditions more easily and spot diseases, like damping-off, at an earlier stage under bright white lighting. As high-efficiency and cost-effective alternatives to higher-priced red LEDs, full-spectrum LEDs can help lower the costs of a grower’s entire lighting system. “Samsung’s full-spectrum-based horticulture LEDs present a new way of using LED lighting to improve plant cultivation at reduced system costs,” said Un Soo Kim, senior vice president of LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “We plan to further expand our horticulture offerings by integrating the latest in smart LED lighting technology, including Samsung’s leading sensor and connectivity solutions.” In addition to its full-spectrum white LEDs, Samsung has added blue, red and far-red LEDs to its horticulture family to offer an extensive variety of wavelength combinations and meet the different design needs of horticulture lighting manufacturers. Built on Samsung’s market-proven LED technologies, the new full spectrum and color LED lineups feature a high degree of reliability, making them well-suited to withstand high temperatures and humidity levels as well as agricultural chemicals used in greenhouses and vertical farming. Samsung’s horticulture LED packages are now in mass production for lighting manufacturers and growers worldwide. The modules will become available in the first quarter of 2019. Samsung’s New Horticulture LED Lineups:
Product Size (mm) Light Color PPF** (μmol/s) PE*** (μmol/J)

Vertical farming is the practice of growing crops in vertically stacked layers and usually takes place in controlled, indoor environments.
** PPF (photosynthetic photon flux) indicates the total amount of photons in the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) range – a spectral range between 400 and 700nm – that can enhance plant photosynthesis and is measured in micromoles per second (μmol/s).
*** PE (photon efficacy) indicates the light efficacy level for photosynthesis in plants and is measured in micromoles per joule (μmol/J).

Samsung Electronics Brings Multi-terabyte Storage Capacities at Accessible Price with 860 QVO SSD

0
Samsung Electronics America, today unveiled its new consumer solid state drive (SSD) lineup — the Samsung 860 QVO SSD — featuring up to four terabytes (TB) of storage capacity with exceptional speed and reliability. Built on the company’s high-density 4-bit multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash architecture, the 860 QVO makes terabyte capacities more accessible to the masses at approachable price points. “Today’s consumers are using, producing and storing more high-resolution files than ever, including 4K videos and graphics-intensive games, escalating demand for greater capacities and performance in storage devices,” said Dr. Mike Mang, vice president of Brand Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics.“Samsung continues to lead the move toward multi-terabyte SSDs with the introduction of the Samsung 860 QVO, delivering fast performance, reliability and value to more consumers around the world.” Mainstream PC users handling large multi-media content often need to upgrade their PC’s storage to improve everyday computing experience. Based on the commonly used SATA interface and 2.5-inch form factor, the 860 QVO fits perfectly in most standard laptops or desktops. Also, by offering both high capacity and performance in a single, affordable drive, the 860 QVO eliminates the need to use a combination of an SSD and an HDD for booting and storage. Featuring sequential read and write speeds of up to 550 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 520 MB/s, respectively[1], the 860 QVO achieves the same level of performance as today’s 3-bit MLC SSD, thanks to Samsung’s latest 4-bit V-NAND and the proven MJX controller. The drive is also integrated with Intelligent TurboWrite technology[2], which helps to accelerate speeds while maintaining high performance for longer periods of time. Based on a thorough analysis of consumers’ SSD usage patterns, Samsung has designed the drive for optimal reliability: a three-year limited warranty[3] or up to 1,440 terabytes written (TBW) for the 4TB version, and 720 TBW and 360 TBW for the 2TB and 1TB versions, respectively. The 860 QVO will be available on December 16, 2018, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) starting at $149.99 for the 1TB model. Samsung Names 250 Classrooms as State Finalists in $2 Million* National STEM Contest

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. today announced the 250 state finalists in the 9th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest in which teachers and students have a chance to win a share of $2 million* in technology and school supplies. The nationwide competition challenges students in grades 6-12 to apply STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills to find creative solutions to real-world issues impacting their local communities. This year, teachers nationwide submitted creative and strategic proposals to solve current issues, such as school shootings, vaping, lead in water, accessibility and bullying. “We are again humbled by the passion of classrooms all across the country to create lasting change in their communities,” said Ann Woo, Senior Director of Corporate Citizenship at Samsung Electronics America. “The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest submissions reflect the pulse of the nation’s students as well as a broad geographic span of the country. We look forward to seeing how their STEM projects unfold in the coming months.” Five schools from each state** were selected as state finalists from a pool of more than 2,000 entries nationwide. Each state finalist will receive a Samsung tablet for their classroom and has the opportunity to advance through future phases of the contest to win additional prizes and educational opportunities. “I love participating in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest because the whole concept of the challenge is helping others and making our world a better place,” said Tate Rector, a teacher at Beebe Junior High School in Arkansas, an Arkansas state finalist in this year’s competition and a 2017 national finalist. “That is what we hope these young engineers are going to do when they become adults and I think it is awesome that Samsung encourages them to start thinking about it at such a young age.”
  • 50 state winners will advance to the next phase of the contest and receive $20,000 in technology and supplies, as well as a video kit to help showcase their project in action.
  • 10 national finalists will be selected to travel to the National Finalist Pitch Event in the spring to present their project to a panel of judges. For achieving national finalist status, seven of these schools will receive a $50,000 Samsung technology package while the remaining three will be named national grand prize winners.
  • The three national grand prize winners will receive $100,000 in classroom technology and supplies.
  • The general public will elect one Community Choice winner from the pool of national finalists who will be eligible to win an additional $10,000 in Samsung technology.
As part of this year’s competition, Samsung also kicked off a collaboration with DonorsChoose.org, the nation’s largest fundraising site for public school teachers, to provide funding to teachers that applied for the competition by matching 50 percent of their funding amount, up to $200 per teacher. Even for those classrooms that were not selected as state finalists, Samsung will continue to match donations through the end of 2018. More than $38,000 has been raised to date for schools of all sizes nationwide. From Hawaii to Alaska, and Maine to Key West, the Solve for Tomorrow Contest has a broad reach across the U.S. and supports schools with varying classroom needs. The contest even attracted a submission from a small island school in Wisconsin, which at one point, had a senior class comprised of a single student. The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest was created to encourage innovation among young students while addressing the technology gap in classrooms across the country. Since its inception in 2009, the contest has provided more than $23 million in technology.
